Sammy Sosa, Derrek Lee to Be Inducted into Cubs Hall of Fame

The opening ceremonies are underway in Chicago at the 2025 Cubs Convention, with Sammy Sosa’s return standing as a hallmark of the event. Tom Ricketts formally invited Sosa back into the Cubs family on December 19th, giving fans more excellent news after the recent Kyle Tucker trade. Sosa apologized for his past actions, and all eyes turned to Cubs Convention.

Last year, Kerry Wood and Aramis Ramirez were inducted into the Cubs Hall of Fame. Two great Cubs immortalized forever within the walls of Wrigley Field. This January, the group is even more scintillating.

Sosa accrued 60.7 fWAR while with the Cubs, hitting 545 home runs with a 139 OPS+. He arguably saved baseball along with Mark McGwire in 1998. Thanks to that epic display, almost everyone who grew up around that time has a special place in their heart for Sosa.

When fans think of Slammin’ Sammy Sosa, they remember the home runs. They also remember him running around the bases of Wrigley Field with an American Flag, cheering up the crowd at the first Cubs home game after the September 11th terror attacks. He made sure to bring a flag with him in his return to Chicago, providing some excitement for the fans who made their way to the ballroom at the Sheraton.

Derrek Lee will almost certainly get overshadowed by his partner for this induction, but he deserves his own recognition as well.
