The Cubs (26-36) just got by the Los Angeles Angels to drop a season-low 10-games under the .500 mark. Chicago’s slide in the standings is mainly due to an anemic offense that is scoring 2.5 runs a game over their last 10 contests. They now wrap up what has been a difficult West Coast road trip with a series against the Giants in San Francisco this weekend.
The Giants (32-30) find themselves with a winning record and are in contention for a Wild Card spot, which is not common for an odd year. They have been hit well this season with a .743 team OPS, which is the 10th-best in MLB. Former Mets Michael Conforto and J.D. Davis have combined for 21 home runs and 65 RBI this season to help pace the offense. LaMonte Wade Jr. is having a huge year seemingly out of nowhere with a team-high .887 OPS and eight homers.
The Giants also have the 10th-best ERA in baseball at an even 4.00 mark. Alex Cobb, Anthony DeSclafani, and Logan Webb have been a very effective three-headed monster atop the rotation. Tyler Rogers and fireballing closer Camilo Doval have been lights-out at the back end of the bullpen.
The Cubs are reeling right now and this series won’t be very easy, not that any of them are these days. David Ross and company desperately need something to go right soon before this slide in the standings becomes a freefall.

What to Watch For
- Ian Happ had two hits and four walks against the Angels and was by far the most effective Cubs hitter in the series.
- Stroman has had two excellent starts in a row to keep his team from totally imploding.
- The Giants have yet to name starting pitchers for Saturday and Sunday.
- Chicago has not hit a home run since Sunday’s game.
