Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (3/6/23): Cubs 6, Mariners 2 – Wesneski Solid in Yet Another W
The Cubs traveled to Peoria Monday to play the Seattle Mariners as spring training entered its second week. Chicago relied on their usual formula of quality pitching and timely hitting to secure another win that featured big contributions from young players.
The Cubs jumped on M’s ace Luis Castillo in the opening inning as Nico Hoerner singled and came around to score on an Eric Hosmer double that was ripped down the first base line. Christopher Morel plated Hosmer with a hard-hit single to left for a 2-0 lead.
Hayden Wesneski was not as sharp as we saw in his first outing but he was still pretty good. The former Yankees prospect threw into the 3rd inning, allowing only one unearned run, and the Cubs maintained a 2-1 advantage until Brennen Davis doubled and was chased home on an Edwin Ríos triple in the 7th.
After Seattle hit a home run to cut the lead to one, the Cubs went on to tally three runs in the 9th. Kevin Alcántara doubled to start the rally and Chicago took home the 6-2 victory. (Box score)

They got another quality pitching performance and were able to pad their lead late.
Stats That Matter
- Wesneski committed the error that led to his unearned run: 2.2 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 4 H, 3 K, and 1 BB.
- Trey Mancini had two more hits as he stays red-hot.
- Rowan Wick was impressive, striking out two in a perfect inning of work.
Bottom Line
Wesneski is making a push to earn a spot in the starting rotation and Mancini seems like a great pickup for the Cubs.
