Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (9/10/22): Giants 5, Cubs 2 – One Bad Inning Dooms Cubs in Loss To Giants

The Cubs sought their first series win in a couple weeks against the Giants at Wrigley Field Saturday. Chicago was doomed by one bad inning and went down to defeat.

Ian Happ put the Cubs ahead in bottom of the 1st with a slicing RBI double off Logan Webb. Marcus Stroman hit a rough patch in the top of the second inning when David Villar doubled home a run and then scored go-ahead tally on a balk to put San Francisco up 2-1.

Joey Bart followed with a two-run home run to left field and the Giants took a 4-1 lead. Alfonso Rivas got one of the runs back tripling and coming in to score on a throwing error for a little league homer.

Webb was excellent from that point on, not giving the Cubs anything through seven innings. Villar hit a solo dinger in the 8th inning to increase San Francisco’s advantage to three. Nothing changed from there and the game ended 5-2. (Box score)

Why the Cubs Lost

Stroman had one bad inning and a lack of offense prevented any kind of significant comeback.

Eye on the Future

  • Rivas had two hits and has continued to really square up the ball since returning from Iowa.
  • Nico Hoerner only had one hit but he did score a run.

Taking Note

  • Stroman was fighting it a bit on Saturday: 4 IP, 4 R, 7 H, 4 K, and 1 BB.
  • Happ had a pair of doubles and continues his big season.

Bottom Line

The Cubs as currently constructed are going to struggle with elite starting pitchers and that was the case Saturday. Chicago could certainly use a couple of impact bats this off-season.

On Deck

The rubber-match of the series will be Sunday night at 7:08pm CT. Wade Miley takes on yet to be announced Giants starter in a game exclusively airing on ESPN.
