Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (9/3/22): Cardinals 8, Cubs 4 – Big Inning Dooms Cubs
The Cubs aimed to even their series with the Cardinals Saturday night at Busch Stadium. St. Louis was able to break out the big bats yet again to erase a Chicago lead and win this series.
The Cubs rallied for three runs in the top of the 1st against their nemesis Adam Wainwright. Franmil Reyes singled home the first run and Rafael Ortega followed with his own base hit to plate a pair. The Cardinals immediately battled back in the bottom of frame when Paul Goldschmidt took Drew Smyly deep for a two-run homer.
St. Louis exploded for six runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning, Tommy Edman and Tyler O’Neill hit back-to-back home runs to open the inning. Smyly loaded the bases and was lifted for Jeremiah Estrada who allowed a bases-clearing double to Yadier Molina to make it 7-3.
Both teams would add a run but the game was settled from that point and the Cardinals would take home 8-4 victory. (Box score)
Why the Cubs Lost
It was a rare bad start for Smyly who has been good for most of the year. Once they got way behind the Cubs had little chance of coming back.
Eye on the Future
- Reyes had two more hits on Saturday and drove in a pair of runs.
- A game to forget for Drew Smyly: 2.1 IP, 7 R, 5 H, 3 K, and 3 BB.
- Ian Happ had two more knocks Saturday.
The Cardinals are rolling right now and the Cubs just can’t match them at the moment. Not really much more to add at this point, the schedule lightens up considerably after Sunday’s game so the results should improve.
Chicago attempts to avoid the sweep Sunday at 1:15pm CT. Miles Mikolas battles Marcus Stroman in a game airing on Marquee Sports Network and 670 The Score.
