Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (9/2/22): Cardinals 8, Cubs 0 – Birds Bash Cubs at Busch

The Cubs began the final leg of their three-city road trip in St. Louis on Friday night. It did not go well for Chicago and the Cardinals buried them in a lopsided shutout loss.

Adrian Samson ran into trouble in the bottom of the 1st inning putting two men on base. Tyler O’Neill was able to line a two-run single to left field to give St. Louis a 2-0 lead.

The Cubs were able to get runners on against Jordan Montgomery yet were unable to come through with a big hit early in the game. Sampson settled down after his opening frame issues and kept the deficit at two through five innings.

Corey Dickerson singled in a run off of Javier Assad in the 6th inning to increase St. Louis’s advantage to 3-0. Sean Newcomb took over and got lit up in the late innings allowing five runs on two home runs as the Cardinals rolled to the 8-0 victory. (Box score)

Why the Cubs Lost

They failed to get hits with runners in scoring position (0-9) throughout the game. A couple of timely hits would have at least made it a closer contest.

Eye on the Future

  • Nick Madrigal had two hits on Friday but fitting in the theme of the night could not come through with two runners on in the 7th inning.
  • Seiya Suzuki also had a couple of singles.

Taking Note

  • Sampson pitched well enough to win if he had gotten some run support: 5 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 4 K, and 2 BB.

Bottom Line

This was just one of those games for the Cubs, the Cardinals took an early lead and never looked back. It’s gonna happen when you’re an undermanned team. Also, it’s not looking very good for Sean Newcomb to make the roster in 2023.

On Deck

Game two of the series is Saturday at 6:15pm CT. Drew Smyly faces off against Adam Wainwright on the mound and the broadcast is available on Marquee Sports Network and 670 The Score.
