Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (8/27/22): Brewers 7, Cubs 0 – Brewers Explode Late, Bury Cubs

The Cubs were hoping to win another series against the Brewers Saturday night at American Family Field. An early pitchers duel took a turn late after one bad inning and Milwaukee was able to even the series.

Starters Drew Smyly and Brandon Woodruff were on point from the beginning on Saturday. Neither team could muster a run through the first six innings of the contest.

Rowan Wick took over for Smyly in the 7th inning and it did not go well. Two singles and a throwing error on a Jace Peterson bunt brought home the first run of the game for the home team. Wick then made a mistake to Christian Yelich who found some of his old power and lifted a three-run home run down the right field line for a 4-0 advantage.

Milwaukee added three more runs in the 8th to really put the game away. The Cubs offense could not generate anything Saturday and went pretty quietly 7-0. (Box score)

Why the Cubs Lost

Keeping with the theme of the last few weeks, Chicago is struggling to score runs right now. The bullpen also finally cracked a bit under all the pressure of pitching in so many close games lately.

Eye on the Future

• Seiya Suzuki was very good Saturday with two doubles and a walk as he continues his season-long success against Milwaukee.
• Alfonso Rivas had a single in his return from Iowa.

Taking Note

• Smyly continues to make a strong case for coming back next season: 6 IP, 0 R, 5 H, 2 K, and 1 BB.
• Wick is not making a very strong case for a role next year. He has always had the stuff but getting results consistently continues to be a problem.

Bottom Line

Results like this are going to happen when the Cubs as currently constructed face a hurler like Brandon Woodruff. They are getting very important answers on what players they should be able to count on in a hopefully more successful 2023.
