Brennen Davis Could Be Headed to South Bend Soon (Updated)

Following the news that Alexander Canario has been promoted to Triple-A Iowa comes word that Brennen Davis could soon be ready to rejoin the affiliated ranks. The highly-touted outfield prospect has been shelved since early May with a nerve issue in his back that was alleviated with minor surgery and he’s been ramping up in the Arizona Complex League for the last week.

According to Tommy Birch of the Des Moines Register, Davis may be heading to High-A South Bend soon to begin what should be a quick rehab process. The Cubs currently have a wealth of outfielders at Iowa and Davis was out of action for a while, so starting out a couple levels lower makes sense. He can work up from South Bend to Tennessee and then finish the season in Iowa, though that brings up some interesting questions about other prospects.

Depending on how quickly Davis moves up, the Cubs will need to find room for him at each stop. Perhaps they should just promote Pete Crow-Armstrong to Double-A in order to give Davis a spot and fill the void left by Canario. Then Canario can be in Chicago by the time Davis gets back up to Des Moines. Disregard the continuity error caused by Davis and PCA both being at Tennessee, that’s hardly a concern.

Given their current position, I think it would behoove the Cubs to be aggressive with top-tier prospects down the stretch while also getting a headstart on some of the necessary procedural moves on the 40-man roster. The likelihood of that happening is probably pretty low, but there’s still more than a month left in the season and it’s possible we’ll see the front office make a few moves.

Update: Davis will be at South Bend on Tuesday, and farm director Jared Banner said the plan is to have the top prospect back to Triple-A shortly after. Maybe he’ll skip Double-A entirely, thus allowing PCA to slide on up with ease.
