Chicago Cubs Lineup (8/14/22): Thompson on Hill, Morel at Third, Reyes DH as Cubs Look For Sweep

The Chicago Cubs have been playing very well since the All-Star break. They’ve won five of seven series and boast a 12-8 record. A win today in Cincinnati would give them a .619 winning percentage since the break and a nice bit of momentum heading into their series against the Washington Nationals. The second half of August gets a lot more difficult, with 14 games against the Cardinals, Brewers, and Blue Jays combined, so winning now may serve to lessen the pain of inevitable losses that loom.

Keegan Thompson (9-5, 3.36 ERA) will take the hill for the Cubs today. As a starter, Thompson has a 4.07 ERA and he’s certainly had his share of rough starts mixed in. At 99.0 innings pitched this season, Thompson is closing in on the most innings he’s pitched as a pro (129.2), and that was back in 2018 before the world got all whacky with COVID. The hope, of course, is that he is able to get stronger in these final two months and close the season out on a hot stretch.

Rafael Ortega leads off playing center today, Ian Happ is in left, Seiya Suzuki is in right, Franmil Reyes is DH, and Nico Hoerner is at short. Patrick Wisdom is on first, Zach McKinstry is at second, Yan Gomes is catching, and Christopher Morel is at third.

First pitch is scheduled for 12:40pm CT and the game will be broadcast on Marquee Sports Network and 670 The Score.
