Willson Contreras and Ian Happ Not Traded, Will Remain in Chicago

Wow, so much to unpack following this trade deadline. We’ll certainly continue to dig into everything, but for now it appears that the Cubs will not be trading either Willson Contreras or Ian Happ.

I’d be lying if I told you I didn’t do the old double fist pump when I read this. After going through last season’s trade deadline, today was beginning to bring back those old feelings and the Cubs fan in me is very happy right now.

How this impacts the Cubs going forward isn’t super clear. The Cubs will certainly at least make a qualifying offer to Contreras. That’s assuming, of course, that they don’t extend him, which there’s been no signal at all from the Cubs that they will. But, this is baseball and things happen, often unexpectedly, as we’re seeing right now.
