Brewers Trade Josh Hader to Padres for Taylor Rogers, Dinelson Lamet, Prospects

In a huge move Monday afternoon, the Brewers have sent closer Josh Hader to San Diego in exchange for Padres closer Taylor Rogers, righty reliever Dinelson Lamet, lefty pitching prospect Robert Gasser, and outfield prospect Esteury Ruiz. Not sure how this changes the delta for the Padres’ win projections, but that’s quite a river of talent.

Gasser was ranked the Padres’ No. 7 overall prospect by MLB.com and Ruiz was at 28, so it’s a pretty solid prospect haul in that perspective. Lamet has fallen off badly this season and has been relegated to the bullpen due to his high walk rate and propensity to find barrels. He’s still capable of touching upper 90’s and he strikes out a lot of batters too, so the raw talent is there.

Rogers will probably cede the 9th inning to Devin Williams and he’s a free agent after this season, so the Brewers likely saw this as their best chance to move Hader for a big return. Even if this move doesn’t immediately make them better, it makes them a little harder to actively dislike.
