Brennen Davis to Resume Baseball Activity Soon, Planning to Play Again This Season

Brennen Davis is currently the Cubs’ number one ranked prospect and prior to the season the general consensus was that he’d be in Chicago before summer’s end. A slow start at Iowa had many wondering if perhaps Davis was feeling pressure from all of the hype and attention. Turned out it was a sore back that was slowing him down and in May he was placed on the IL.

Davis had surgery to correct the issue in early June and has been on the mend ever since. We haven’t heard much since that time, but Tommy Birch of the Des Moines Register wrote Thursday that Davis told him in a text message that he plans to return to baseball this season, and perhaps within the next few weeks.

Per Birch:

Davis will begin running progression next week and wrote that he’ll begin baseball activity “shortly after.” Davis added that everything will be based off how he’s feeling and when trainers believe he’s ready to return.

This is great news if it does pan out and even better if Davis is anywhere near 100%. Davis was struggling in Iowa, hitting .195/286/.299 with a strikeout rate over 34% and if that was all due to his back ailment then it’s very possible he returns in 2023 better than ever. It’s also possible that Davis gets assigned the Arizona Fall League in order to get in some playing time prior to next season. We’ll have to wait and see.
