Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (6/30/22): Cubs 15, Reds 7 – Wisdom Goes Off in Cubs Rout
The Cubs came into Thursday hoping to win their second consecutive series against the Reds. Chicago did just that, riding a power surge led by Patrick Wisdom to crush Cincinnati.
Wisdom put the Cubs ahead in the 1st inning on a misplayed ground ball by Brandon Drury. The big third baseman did much better in the 2nd, crushing a long grand slam to left field to put his team ahead by six.
Kyle Hendricks made his second quality start in a row, easily going six innings with the big lead. The Cubs went off in the final few innings putting up eight more runs including Wisdom’s second home run in the 6th.
Outfielder Max Schrock pitched for the Reds in the 8th inning and allowed three homers. Eventually the Cubs would close out the 15-7 win. (Box score)
Why the Cubs Won
They exploded for 15 runs on Thursday night, and they’re probably going to come out on top more often than not when they score like that.
Eye on the Future
Narciso Crook, who was called up earlier today, had his first career hit, a run-scoring double, and added another later. Christopher Morel appears to be over his slump with five hits including a home run on Thursday.
Stats That Matter
- Hendricks finally has two good starts back to back: 6 IP, 2 R, 6 H, 7 K, and 1 BB.
- Wisdom had a career high six runs batted in and added a hit along with his two dingers.
- P.J. Higgins had three hits and also had a home run on Thursday.
That was a fun game to watch, especially, with more prospects from the minor-league system making a big impact. The Cubs should continue to give players like Crook and Morel a long look.
Chicago welcomes the Red Sox to Wrigley Field for three games starting Friday at 1:20pm CT. Adrian Sampson takes on Cubs legend Rich Hill in a game available on MLB Network (out of market only) and Marquee Sports Network.
