The Cubs dropped a single game in a rain-abbreviated series in Baltimore against the Orioles and the postponement of the second means Chicago has played only one game in the last four days. They needed the rest because a trip to the Bronx and three games with the mighty Yankees begin Friday.
New York has the best record in baseball and is the first team to reach the 40-win mark in 2022. The Yankees have the highest home run total (83) in the majors and the second-best team OPS (.747), led by Aaron Judge‘s MVP-worthy season that includes 22 dingers and a 1.055 OPS.
Amazingly, the Yankees’ pitcher staff has been even better than the offense and leads MLB in every major category, including a 2.67 team ERA. The Cubs will miss the two best starters Gerrit Cole and Nestor Cortes, but the rest of the rotation is hardly a pushover.
The big storyline for Cubs fans is that Friday will be the first game against former star first baseman Anthony Rizzo. The Cubs have already gone through this with Javy Báez and Kris Bryant, but it seems like the fan connection with Rizzo was stronger than anyone else. Probably for the best that this series is being played the Bronx.
It’s going to be an emotional weekend for everyone, although the actual play on the field might not be very good. Who knows, maybe the Cubs will surprise people and win the series.

What to Watch For
- Miley is scheduled to come off the injured list and make a start after missing a couple weeks with a shoulder injury.
- Christopher Morel tripled and homered against the Orioles as he shows no sign of slowing down.
- Manager David Ross continues to put Jason Heyward into the lineup on a near-daily basis, despite the outfielder’s numbers not even coming close to justifying the move. It’s not like it has a big impact on the team’s trajectory, but it would be nice for younger players to get that time.
