Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (4/29/22): Brewers 11, Cubs 1 – Brewers Bash Cubs in Lopsided Affair

The Cubs downward slide continue on Friday night when they went to American Family Insurance Field to battle the Brewers. Milwaukee had a homer party off of Kyle Hendricks as they cruised to a very easy win.

The home team jumped ahead in the 2nd inning on a Lorenzo Cain infield single and a two-run homer off the bat of Jace Peterson. Andrew McCutchen pounded another Hendricks mistake for a solo shot in the 3rd to make it 4-0.

That was more than enough for Milwaukee starter Adrian Houser who kept Chicago off the board during his outing. Christian Yelich took the Professor deep for a two-run jack in the 5th inning to end his day.

The Brewers would add three more homers including two from Hunter Renfroe and the Cubs would score a single run to avoid the shutout in a pretty listless 11-1 defeat. (Box score)

Why the Cubs Lost

The Brewers entered Friday’s game with a total of 14 home runs in 2022. They hit six home runs on Friday, not exactly a formula for a Cubs win.

Key Moment

Nico Hoerner could just not make a play on a perfectly placed Cain ground ball in the 2nd inning. If he had, the Cubs would’ve gotten out of the frame unscathed. Instead, it led to three runs for the Brewers. That being said, the way Chicago’s offense performed it likely would not have mattered.

Stats That Matter

  • David Ross described Hendricks’ stuff as flat during a mid-game interview Friday and I agree. His line: 4.1 IP, 6 R, 7 H, 2 K, and 2 BB.
  • Alfonso Rivas had two of the Cubs’ three hits on Friday as he continues to show out.

Bottom Line

With their undermanned roster, the Cubs have no margin for error. Against quality teams like the Brewers, things can get pretty ugly if the Cubs aren’t on top of their game. And if Kyle Hendricks is going to be this inconsistent, Chicago has even bigger issues in 2022

On Deck

The Cubs look to shake off the beatdown for game two of the series Saturday at 6:10pm CT. It’s a pair of lefties on the mound when Justin Steele takes on Eric Lauer in a game broadcast on Marquee Sports Network and 670 The Score.
