Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (4/5/22): Rangers 11, Cubs 5 – Loss Ends Spring Training, Next Stop Chicago

The Cubs headed to Surprise to take on the Texas Rangers in the final game of spring training Tuesday as a handful of big leaguers made brief appearances before heading to the airport. The Rangers were able to win the battle of minor league camps to close out the spring schedule.

Michael Hermosillo provided the Cubs with their only highlight on Tuesday, blasting a three-run home run in the 1st inning to build a 3-0 lead.

Manager David Ross and the rest of the Cubs on the 40-man roster took off for Mesa in the 3rd inning. The young players that remained were very sloppy and committed a total of six errors in what became a pretty lopsided game in favor of Texas. (Box score)

Why the Cubs Lost

They did not make much of an effort to win this game. The only real goal was to get through healthy, which they were able to do.

Key Moment

Hermosillo had a really good spring and hopefully will be able to punish lefties like he did on his long home run off Taylor Hearn Tuesday.

Stats That Matter

  • Patrick Wisdom had a hard-hit single and a walk in his two plate appearances.
  • Rafael Ortega doubled against a left-hander which was very rare for him last year when he struggled mightily with left-handed pitchers.
  • 2020 third-round pick Jordan Nwogu had a pair of singles and two runs driven in.

Bottom Line

All the preliminaries are over and the games that count begin right now. It’s time to see if the Cubs will be able to overachieve and fight for a playoff spot or will have another disappointing season in 2022.

On Deck

The Cubs open the regular season at Wrigley Field against the NL Central Division champion Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday at 1:20pm CT. Kyle Hendricks takes the mound against Corbin Burnes in a game available on MLB Network (out of market), Marquee, and 670 The Score.
