Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (8/15/21): Marlins 4, Cubs 1 – These Still Go to 11

With their third straight loss via sweep, the Cubs have now lost 11 in a row for the second time this season and they have more than an outside shot at losing 100 games. They could even finish with the worst record in club history, though even if they manage to come short of that it’s clear this current version is the worst roster the Cubs have fielded in pretty much forever.

Frank Schwindel gave his team its only offense on the afternoon, hitting a solo homer to knot the game at one run apiece in the top of the 6th. That would prove to be three runs short of what the Cubs needed as they yet again saddled Alec Mills with a loss in spite of a solid effort.

The Marlins tacked on a run in response to Schwindel’s dinger and then got a two-run shot from Jesus Aguilar to put the game out of reach. The Cubs can’t win when they score a bunch of runs and they can’t win when they get good pitching performances. This is just a bad team. (Box score)

Why the Cubs Lost

They only scored one run and struck out 11 times with two walks. The only guys doing anything offensively weren’t even on the team at the start of the season, though that’s not really saying much given out the roster has turned over.

Key Moment

Jazz Chisholm‘s homer to lead off the 6th put the Marlins up 2-1 and effectively ended the game.

Stats That Matter

  • Mills pitched well but wasn’t perfect: 5.2 IP, 7 H, 2 ER 4 K
  • Trevor Megill allowed a run in two-thirds of an inning and now has a 12.19 ERA.
  • Schwindel is now hitting .381 with a .714 slugging percentage and a 200 wRC+ as a Cub.

Bottom Line

This team is awful and has moved into the No. 8 draft position with just a game separating the Cubs from the fifth spot. They are very, very bad and could very well extend this losing streak.

On Deck

The Cubs now head to Cincinnati to face a Reds team that is just 2.5 games out of the Wild Card. Justin Steele will get his second career start against fellow lefty Wade Miley in a game that starts at 6:10pm CT on Marquee Sports Network and 670 The Score.
