Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (8/3/21): Rockies 13, Cubs 6 – Rockies Get High Score at Coors
The Cubs continued their new era with a trip to Coors Field to take on the Rockies Tuesday night. Colorado hardly looked like a fourth-place team as they crushed Chicago in the Mile High City.
The Cubs took the lead in the 2nd inning with an RBI groundout off the bat of Jason Heyward, but Zach Davies — who was not traded, to everyone’s surprise — had a rough game and one run wasn’t going to stand up. He loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning for catcher Elias Diaz and the Rockies backstop cracked a long grand slam to left center to put the home team up 4-1.
Ian Happ gave his team a boost with a solo home run very deep to left field in the top of the 4th inning, after which Davies quickly gave away any momentum the Cubs had. This time it was a three-run bomb surrendered to Sam Hilliard.
The Rockies weren’t done and tacked on six more runs to get them up to 13. The Cubs tallied a handful of late runs to make for a less ugly 13-6 final. (Box score)
Why the Cubs Lost
When your starter gives up seven runs in just four innings, your odds of winning are not good.
Key Moment
Diaz’s grand slam was the catalyst for a big offensive day for the home team. The Rockies never looked back from that swing.
Stats That Matter
- At least Davies didn’t damage his trade value: 4 IP, 7 R, 6 H, 1 K, and 2 BB.
- Manager David Ross must not have wanted to watch the game either. The Cubs skipper was ejected in the 2nd inning for arguing balls and strikes.
- Happ also walked and scored three runs in an overall productive day.
Bottom Line
Well, that was not much of a game and it didn’t tell us anything about the Cubs’ future. Davies gave more evidence that he might not be a long-term solution in the rotation.
