Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (4/21/21): Cubs 16, Mets 4 – Cubs Hammer Mets in Blowout Win
The Cubs haven’t won a series since they took two of three from the Pirates to open the season. Chicago had a chance to change that Tuesday and ended up doing just that with ease, aided by the Mets’ sloppy defense.
New York grabbed a 2-0 lead through three innings as starter David Peterson kept the Cubs off the board and hitless. The Mets collapsed in the 4th inning, however, surrendering six singles, committing two errors, and giving up one walk allowing the Cubs to score seven runs. A two-run homer from Pete Alonzo in the 5th temporarily cut the lead to 7-4.
Chicago added three more in the bottom of the frame when Matt Duffy hit a two-run single. Javy Báez put an exclamation point on the romp when he blasted a grand slam in the 6th. Alec Mills pitched three innings to help close out the Cubs win. (Box score)
Why the Cubs Won
The Cubs jumped all over the Mets’ mistakes and put the ball in play tonight. It was an all-around solid effort on both sides.
Key Moment
David Bote punched a bloop single to right with the bases loaded in the 4th inning. The knock scored two to give the Cubs a 4-2 lead and a Mets throwing error allowed Bote to advance to second.
Stats That Matter
- Zach Davies gave up some hard contact but avoided big damage: 4 IP, 2 R, 5 H, 2 K, and 2 BB.
- Kris Bryant reached three times and scored three runs.
- Duffy had three hits and a bases-loaded walk and 3 RBI.
- Báez did not strike out Tuesday, which is as good of a sign as his homer.
Bottom Line
Putting the ball in play can result in good things happening. The Mets certainly helped magnify that point with truly putrid defense. It was nice to see the Cubs win consecutive games for the first time in two weeks.
