Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (3/21/21): Cubs 11, Reds 6 – Bote Bombs Reds (VIDEO)

The battle for the Cubs’ starting second base role heated up in a big way Sunday at Sloan Park. Veteran Eric Sogard struck the first blow, but it was David Bote who landed the knockout punches as a pair of long homers sent the Reds off to defeat. (Box score)

Why the Cubs Won

They hit four home runs to bury Cincinnati early, then hung on late to win.

Key Moment

Bote hit a massive three-run bomb off of Tyler Mahle in the bottom of the 3rd to put the Cubs up 5-1.

Stats That Matter

  • Alec Mills had an uneven start but did escape most of his jams: 4.1 IP, 3 R, 6 H, 1 K, and 1 BB.
  • Sogard and Jake Marisnick hit back-to-back jacks to leadoff the bottom of the 1st.
  • Bote also hit a two-run shot in the 6th for a total of five batted in Sunday.

Bottom Line

Nico Hoerner has come back to earth after his white-hot start while Bote catches fire. Add in Sogard and David Ross has a lot to mull over.

On Deck

The Cubs head to Tempe Monday to play the Angels at 3:05pm CT. The LA broadcast is available on MLB.TV.
