Cubs Re-Sign Ryan Tepera to MLB Deal

According to a report from Jon Heyman, the Cubs have re-signed righty reliever Ryan Tepera to an MLB deal. Tepera was a surprise non-tender after pitching well enough to garner an MVP vote in 2020, but similar moves with relievers aren’t all that uncommon. The timing of this move, however, could mean Rowan Wick being a little further behind in his progress from an oblique injury.

The Cubs are at the limit on the 40-man roster and could simply DFA someone to make room, but it’s entirely possible Wick will head to the 60-day IL in order to clear a spot. That seems to make the most sense as he’s also a righty reliever and Tepera busted out last year as a strikeout artist who could work late in games if needed.

Tepera had some control issues, posting career-highs with a 13.5% walk rate and 5.23 BB/9, but he only gave out more than one free pass in an inning twice in 21 appearances. His cutter was one of the best pitches in baseball last season and could really be a weapon if he dials some other things in. More on this as it becomes available.

Update: Gordon Wittenmyer reports that Tepera is guaranteed $800,000 and MLB Trade Rumors adds that it can max out at $1.75 million.
