José Quintana to IL with Lat Inflammation, Jason Adam Recalled

The hits just keep on coming for the Cubs, who have placed José Quintana on the 10-day IL with left lat inflammation. Since I’m operating from my phone and making dinner, I’ll let the press release tell you the rest…

The Chicago Cubs today placed left-handed pitcher José Quintana on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to August 31) with left lat inflammation and recalled right-handed pitcher Jason Adam from the club’s South Bend Alternate site.

Adam will be available for the Cubs tonight when they continue their three-game series at the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Adam, 29, has gone 0-1 with a 7.36 ERA (3 ER/3.2 IP) in three relief appearances with the Cubs this year.  He signed a minor league contract with the Cubs last offseason after going 3-0 with four holds and a 2.91 ERA (7 ER/21.2 IP) in 23 relief appearances for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2019.  He limited opponents to a .200 batting average, turned in a 1.15 WHIP and allowed only one home run in 21.2 innings pitched, all of which contributed to a .601 opponents OPS.

Overall, Adam is 3-4 with a 4.99 ERA (32 ER/57.2 IP) in 57 career relief appearances covering three seasons with the Kansas City Royals (2018), Blue Jays (2019) and Cubs (2020).  The 6-foot-3 Adam was originally selected by the Kansas City Royals in the fifth round of the 2010 Draft out of Blue Valley Northwest High School in Overland Park, Kansas.

Quintana, 31, has no record and a 6.00 ERA (4 ER/6.0 IP) in two relief outings for the Cubs this season.

Additionally, infielder Hernán Pérez cleared waivers and has been assigned outright to the alternate site.  Chicago’s 60-man Player Pool roster stands at 59 players, with 28 active players on the major league roster (plus three 10-day injured list players) in Chicago and 28 players in South Bend.
