Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (2/23/20): Dodgers 4, Cubs 2 – Carrot’s Stick Only Thing Working in Cubs Loss
The Cubs went on the road for the first time this spring to take on the Dodgers in Glendale, and they did so without their everyday players. It was hardly a thrilling game, but at least one Chicago player came to play Sunday.
Tyler Chatwood got the start and faced a bit of a jam in the 1st inning after an error and a single put two on with one out. The righty was able to do what he does best and coaxed a 6-4-3 double play ball from AJ Pollock to get out of his only inning of work unscathed.
After doubling in his first at-bat, Victor Caratini put the Cubs ahead in the 4th inning with a solo homer to right field that was basically the extent of the offense for the road team. A wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by the newly acquired Mookie Betts gave the Dodgers the lead in the 5th and LA would add to the advantage late to pick up the win. (Box score)
Why the Cubs Lost
With the exception of the catcher, the Cubs did very little against the Dodger pitching staff.
Key Moment
It was good to see Chatwood handle his early adversity well. The Cubs are going to need him to be a big contributor this season, especially if he indeed earns a starting role.
Stats That Matter
- Kyle Schwarber made his debut and went 0-for-3 against three left-handed pitchers.
- Colin Rea pitched two clean innings against a loaded Dodgers lineup.
- Ian Happ had a single in three at-bats in his first spring game.
- Caratini doubled in his first at bat from the right side before his left-handed homer.
Bottom Line
All the Cubs position players have seen game action now. Caratini and Willson Contreras and have a chance to be the best catching duo in baseball.
