Raise a Toast to WGN’s Last Cubs Game
Baseball season’s here again
You can catch it all on WGN
So stamp your feet and clap your hands
Chicago Cubs got the greatest fans
-Steve Goodman, Go Cubs Go
For 72 seasons, WGN has broadcast the Cubs in one fashion or another. This Friday, September 27, 2019, that streak ends. It makes me sad. The connection between WGN and the Cubs was both enduring and effective as the superstation created fans around the country and even the world. And while the exclusive partnership to carry all Cubs games ended years ago, even the mere mention of the letters WGN still evoke the warm nostalgia of the 80’s and the team I grew up with

The Cubs without WGN are still going to be great, just different. Also, the lyrics to Go Cubs Go are going to really confuse the next generation of fans.
I recognize the financial reasons the Cubs founded the nascent Marquee Sports Network and I am not bitter or angry, just wistful. All that aside, I think we can all agree WGN was a wonderful partner for a long time. So as you watch tonight’s game, raise a toast to WGN…we will miss you!
