Cubs Roster: Carl Edwards, Jr. Called Up, Dillon Maples Optioned to Triple-A, Victor Caratini Begins Rehab

As the Cubs get ready to welcome the Miami Marlins to Wrigley Field for a four-game series starting Monday night, we have some roster housekeeping to take care of. Word came across the Twitter newswire this afternoon that the Cubs were recalling Carl Edwards, Jr. back to the MLB roster and optioning Dillon Maples to Triple-A Iowa.

After being sent down earlier in the year, Edwards looked quite good during his time in Iowa. He posted a 2.16 ERA in 8.1 IP with two walks and seven strikeouts while holding batters to a .107 batting average. In five of his seven outings he did not walk a batter after struggling mightily walks with the MLB club earlier in the season.

Dillon Maples showed flashes of brilliance during his brief time with the Cubs in 2019, but the command issue still persists. Maples walked five batters in just 2.2 innings over three games. There is no questioning how nasty Maples stuff can be, as we saw on display in Seattle, but until he figures out how to reign in the command issues, it will be hard to trust him in the long run.

In other news, Victor Caratini will begin a rehab assignment in an effort to come back from a fractured hamate that he suffered on April 11th against the Pirates.
