Cubs Roster Moves: Dillon Maples Called Up, Randy Rosario Optioned

The bullpen shuffling continued Friday afternoon as we got word that Dillon Maples would be making his first appearance with the big league club this season. Maples gets the call from Triple-A Iowa, where Randy Rosario has been optioned in the corresponding move.

So far in 2019, Maples has posted a 3.38 ERA across 8.0 IP, striking out 16 batters walking eight. Walks have long been an issue for Maples, but his stuff is so nasty that it’s hard not to dream big about his potential to make an impact in the Cubs bullpen. And he’s been cutting down on the free passes lately, so we’ll see whether that continues.

Rosario was pulled mid-batter in Thursday afternoon’s game after he walked Corey Seager on four pitches and then threw the first pitch to the next batter nowhere close to the zone.

Maples threw exactly 5.1 innings for the Cubs in both 2017 and 2018, posting a career ERA of 10.97 with a 16.88 K/9 and 9.28 BB/9. Here is just a quick example of the filth Maples brings to the table (coincidentally, this came in Arizona, where the Cubs will play this weekend).
