Cubs Notes: Hoerner’s Wrist, Morrow Still Shut Down, Russell Could Be Optioned

Theo Epstein addressed a number of items ahead of Thursday’s series finale, many of which we’ve already covered to some extent on these pages. That said, let’s just dispense with deep analysis and bullet out a few of the main points.

  • Nico Hoerner, whose first Double-A dinger stayed in the park, left a recent game after being hit in the left wrist with a pitch. The diagnosis is a simple bruise, no structural damage, so he should return to action soon.
  • Brandon Morrow is still on a cessation from throwing as the Cubs asses his health. Morrow, who is recovering from offseason elbow surgery to alleviate symptoms of a stress reaction, was shut down when he bounced back poorly after a mound session. He could resume throwing in a few weeks, which is a pretty ominous timeline that more or less puts him back no earlier than June.
  • All indications to this point have been that the Cubs will not only activate Addison Russell to the 25-man roster when his suspension ends next week, but that he’ll resume his everyday role at shortstop. However, Epstein noted that all options are still open and that an assignment to Triple-A Iowa is still on the table.

  • Lilliputian reliever Tim Collins was optioned to Triple-A to clear a roster spot for Jon Lester.
