Winter is Coming to Wrigley Field April 23 as Cubs Host Game of Thrones Day

Game of Thrones is about the only thing that might be as interesting as the Cubs for fans of both the epic show and North Side team this spring. And with GoT set to begin its final foray into Westeros on April 14, the marketing folks at HBO have put images of Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen, Arya Stark, and that sort of important Iron Throne thingy on everything from Oreos to Bud Light.

You can count baseball among the various corporations shilling for the series, too. While various teams have run with the Game of Thrones theme in previous years (I have my very own Scott Kingery “Night King” bobblehead from the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs last spring), MLB has partnered with HBO to really promote the heck out of the final season, with every team having their own Game of Thrones Day. Each team’s special day will feature people dressed up as fan-favorite characters walking around the ballpark, a makeshift Iron Throne, and, of course, the ubiquitous bobblehead giveaways.

Maybe fans will get really lucky and real-life couple Kit Harington and Rose Leslie will show up, complete with matching Cubs jerseys and hats. As long as Ed Sheeran isn’t singing the 7th inning stretch and Noah Syndergaard isn’t pitching, we’re cool (as fans of the series already know, both made appearances in the last season). Let’s be honest: As long as the Cubs win, every fan at the park will be a GoT fan for the night and will be attempting strange and drunken selfies on the throne as if they were Tyrion Lannister on his way back from a brothel.

While the show is set for its own Opening Day (or Night, in this case) on April 14, the Cubs will stage their Game of Thrones Day Tuesday, April 23 when they face the Dodgers at 7:05pm CT. Don’t be surprised if the wind off of Lake Michigan is a little icier than usual, or if Viserion makes an appearance flying high over Wrigleyville.

Please note that if you’re super excited for this event and the bobblehead giveaway that you’ll need to purchase a special ticket directly from the Cubs. And once you get your bobblehead, be careful not to let your kid go and Ned Stark poor Drogon’s head (that’s what happened to Kingery’s head when my daughter got her hands on it).
