Injury Updates: Morrow Throwing, Smyly Close to Rehab Assignment

After positive developments with Yu Darvish in the last couple days, the Cubs got some more good news on the injury front as it relates to Brandon Morrow and Drew Smyly.

Morrow threw in the outfield at Wrigley Thursday afternoon, his first time doing so since hitting the DL on July 19 with right biceps inflammation. Morrow was originally placed on the 10-day DL, but was not ready to be activated after the when the time period expired.

In his continued efforts to work his way back from Tommy John surgery, Smyly threw a simulated game this afternoon and is reportedly close to beginning a rehab assignment. What his role would be for the Cubs remains to be seen, but having another talented pitcher at your disposal is never a bad thing when you’re in the midst of a division race.
