CI Recap (3/13/18, SS Game 1) – Padres 7, Cubs 5: Contreras Homers in Return, Monty Makes First Start
The Cubs regulars had a good day at the plate in Peoria against the Padres. Mike Montgomery got stretched out a bit in his first start of the spring, helping to keep the rotation set in the first of two split-squad games. (Box score)
Why The Cubs Lost
The Padres staged a rally against Rob Zastryzny to take the lead in the 7th inning.
Willson Contreras took Jordan Lyles deep for a two-run homer to center in the 3rd inning. The blast gave the Cubs a 4-0 lead.
Stats That (Don’t) Matter
- Contreras was back in the lineup after missing a few days with the flu.
- Kris Bryant singled and walked twice in three plate appearances. His on-base skills just seem to get better all the time.
- Albert Almora Jr. had two hits including a double.
- Montgomery pitched into the 4th inning, allowing two runs on five hits with three strikeouts.
The Cubs lineup could be scary if Contreras can keep showing power like he did Tuesday.
The second half of the Cubs’ split-squad day may have concluded by the time you read this. They take on the Giants at 9pm CT at Sloan Park, an audio feed of which is available on cubs.com
