Cubs Could Snag a Top 5 KATOH College Pitcher (Full List Included)

With the 27th and 30th picks, the Chicago Cubs select…who knows. As Todd Johnson described, the draft is very unpredictable. What we do know, though, is that Jason McLeod will continue to prioritize pitching, even if the organization is changing its strategy of picking pitchers.


With that in mind, which colloge pitchers are most likely to succeed? The obvious pick is Brendan McKay, whose praises have been sung by several scouts and baseball scouting websites. And it’s more than just the great name. KATOH — the minor league proction model that predicts how much WAR a player will produce in his first six years — believes McKay will produce 8 WAR.

Below the Louisville prospect is Griffin Canning, who is ranked 26th by Baseball America and 21st by FanGraphs. Given that the Cubs are drafting in that tier, Canning, projected to produce 6.6 WAR, could be a realistic option for the front office. And in the same general tier are David Peterson and Luke Heimlich, both of whom are similarly projected to create 6.4 WAR.

Either way, the Cubs could have a top 5 KATOH college prospect by the end of tomorrow, maybe even two.
