CI Recap (5/1/17) – Cubs 2, Phillies 10: Rain Game, Go Away
You know that feeling of wanting the rain to subside so you get to watch the Cubs play? Yeah…that didn’t work out so well tonight. The opener of the Cubs’ four-game set with the Phillies was delayed by over an hour due to powerful rain. When the game finally got underway, the rain (and unfortunately the Phillies offense) looked strong as ever.
Brett Anderson lasted just 1.1 innings in this one, surrendering seven runs on seven hits with one walk and one strikeout. He simply wasn’t fooling anyone with his stuff tonight (though it’s worth mentioning that he pitched the 1st inning in a veritable monsoon). Tommy Joseph blasted a three-run homer to solidify a four-spot in the 1st inning for the Phils, and Aaron Altherr delivered a two-run double for the big blow in the 2nd.
On the offensive side, Javier Baez roped an opposite-field home run, and also singled in the bottom of the 9th. That’s about it.
Stats That Matter
- Mike Montgomery was solid in mop-up duty. He threw 3.2 innings of shutout baseball, allowing just two hits while striking out two and walking two.
- Matt Szczur got a pinch-hit RBI on a sacrifice fly that scored Baez (who had reached on an error).
- Justin Grimm gave up three runs in two innings of work, bumping his ERA to a whopping 7.71.
- Javy Baez went 2-for-4 with a HR.
- Brian Duensing threw two scoreless innings, only allowing one hit.
Bottom Line
This game was not fun, and I wish it had been rained out.
On Deck
The Cubs and Phillies continue the four-game set at Wrigley tomorrow night at 7:05. It will be Jeremy Hellickson (RHP) opposing Jon Lester.
