Injury Update: Coghlan, Smith Head to Disabled List, Patton Gets Recalled
There were roster questions coming out of yesterday’s double-header that we knew needed to be addressed, particularly with Trevor Cahill being added to the Cubs roster as the 26th man due to the double-header roster expansion rules.
With Joe Smith’s lackluster performances to start his Cubs career, it was unknown whether Joe Maddon would stick with him or release him. Turns out it’s neither. Joe Smith has been added to the DL with a left hamstring strain. Since joining the Cubs on August 2, Joe has pitched in six games and has a 7.38 ERA while giving up 3 home runs. Not what you want out of a reliever.
There’s always a chance this was something that had been bothering him for a while, which could have contributed to his poor performances. At this point we just don’t know if that is or is not the case.
Joe Smith to DL is corresponding move for Trevor Cahill, the 26th man for yesterday’s double-header, to stay on the roster. #Cubs

Chris Coghlan has also been moved to the DL with a rib contusion. That makes room for Spencer Patton to make a return appearance in the Cubs bullpen.
#Cubs putting Chris Coghlan (rib contusion) on DL and adding Spencer Patton to bullpen.

This couldn’t have come at a more coincidental time with news that Tommy La Stella is joining the Tennessee Smokies to begin his rehab assignment. It’s not certain how long Coghlan will be out and if La Stella will quickly be moved back up to the Cubs roster. My assumption is that we will see La Stella very soon back in Chicago.
