The Rundown: Addison Russell’s Strong Spring Continues, La Stella With 3 Hits, Wada Leaves Start
Because of work and other scheduling issues, last night’s 5-3 win against the A’s was the first spring game I’ve been able to watch live on TV this year. And it was great.
It may not have been the most exciting game, but it was so nice to have baseball back on my television.
Kris Bryant went hitless, which was a bit disappointing, although one of his outs was a shot to left field but right at the outfielder.
The highlight for me had to be Addison Russell. He showed nice patience in his first two at-bats, drawing a pair of walks. He then smacked a double down the left-field line, knocking in one. He also scored two runs.
Jake Arrieta got the start and was solid. He went four innings, giving up an unearned run on four hits, striking out three. He was able to throw multiple types of pitches for strikes, and walked no one.
So far, the Cubs’ top two starters (the other being Jon Lester) are looking to be as advertised.
Tommy La Stella, who played third base, was another bright spot. He worked counts and ended the night 3-for-3 with a run scored. He looked pretty good in the field as well.
I could see La Stella becoming a fan favorite if he has games similar to last night.
Wada leaves start
It seems like every day that passes, the battle for the fifth Cubs’ rotation spot narrows.
Yesterday, it was Tsuyoshi Wada’s turn to take a step back. Pestered by leg injuries throughout the spring, Wada left yesterday’s split-squad game against the Indians after recording only two outs.
The LHP left with a tight left groin and was taken for an MRI. The Cubs don’t think the injury is serious, according to MLB.com.
With Jacob Turner likely to begin the year on the disabled list, Wada’s injury problems and Felix Doubront’s ineffectiveness, the fifth spot is down to Travis Wood and Edwin Jackson.
Eric Jokisch pitched three scoreless innings against the A’s yesterday. I suppose he could enter the picture as a rotation long shot.
