A Tip of the Recap March 10th
The Cubs remained winless in Spring Training action with a 10-6 loss to the Cleveland Indians. Here is the quick recap:
The Good
If you were off of Twitter or not anywhere near the sports world you may have missed it, but Jorge Soler, Javier Baez and Kris Bryant went back-to-back-to-back, each with a no-doubt-about-it shot.
Bryant added a bloop single to improve his spring BA to .400 while Soler sits at .333 and Baez, well, he is at .091; but at least he only struck out once in 3 ABs today.
Welington Castillo went 2 for 3 and got in on the solo HR action to actually tie the game 4-4 and even threw out 2 would-be base-stealers.
Pierce Johnson worked 2 scoreless innings and worked around a hit and 2 walks (thanks to Beef throwing two guys out trying to steal).
Gleyber Torres hit a double and scored on a single by Kyle Schwarber; who now has 5 RBI on the spring.
The Bad
Travis Wood struggled but did work 3 innings, giving up 7 hits, 4 runs (2 earned) and didn’t walk a runner. He had some awful defense behind him.
All the relievers except for Pierce Johnson gave up at least an earned run, with Joe Ortiz giving up 3; none of them were earned due to bad defense.
The Ugly
The Cubs defense provided 4 more errors to bring their total to 14 through 7 games. Better to get them out of the way now instead of in the regular season, but averaging 2 errors per game is not something to feel great about so far.
On Deck
The Cubs are back in action tomorrow at 3:00 PM (CST) against the Dodgers. Jon Lester will take the bump for his 2nd spring start against Zack Greinke.
