Keeping it Real Recap March 9th
The Cubs continued their shoddy spring play with a 6-3 loss to the Padres today. Here is the quick recap.
The Good
Miguel Montero and Mike Olt went deep for the Cubs today. Olt added a walk as well and made one heck of stop at 3rd but his throw was a little high to record the out. Len was very excited to see the play.
Kris Bryant lucked into a bloop single, but also added a walk later to bring his spring average to .286.
Chris Coghlan added two walks to give him 3 in just 2 games to go along with his .667 batting average.
Kyle Hendricks came in for the 3rd and 4th innings and scattered 3 hits while striking out 1. He worked fast and was able to induce some weak contact.
Rondon, Strop and C.J. Edwards each threw a clean inning (Rondon gave up a hit) with 2 K’s each.
Justin Grimm threw a perfect inning.
The Bad
The Cubs struck out 10 times as a team today to follow yesterday’s 12-K performance.
Starlin Castro had a fielding error, while Edwin Jackson and Dexter Fowler each added throwing errors. Jackson’s was most damning because it followed right after Castro’s and should have been a double play that would have erased the runner. Instead he spiked the ball and it went into CF.
Jason Motte gave up two runs on 3 hits and had to be pulled after getting 2 outs because he reached his pitch limit for the inning.
The Ugly
Big shock here, but it was Edwin Jackson, who survived through 2 innings of work giving up 4 runs (none of which were earned) on 4 hits. He gave up a no-doubter to Will Middlebrooks that could have been a solo shot, but was instead a 3-run HR due to Jackson’s throwing error.
Jackson seemed to work pretty quickly in the first inning and got out of that inning unscathed, but did give up two deep fly balls to LF, one of which was caught by an outstanding play from Fowler.
On Deck
Cubs play the Cleveland Indians tomorrow at 3 pm (CST) with Travis Wood getting start for the Cubs.
