The Rundown: Foo Fighters to Play Wrigley, AFL Notes, and More

Today is the first game of the World Series, and that gives me somewhat of a bittersweet feeling. On one hand, after the Series is over, we’ll be without live baseball until Spring Training. On the other hand, this is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated offseasons for the Cubs in a long time.

Having the Giants and Royals meeting in the World Series broke a lot of expectations. Over the course of the playoffs, I only picked two series correctly (Giants over the Nationals and Royals over the Orioles).

Stay tuned for our World Series staff picks later today.

Foo Fighters coming to Wrigley

After playing a show last Saturday at the Cubby Bear to kick off the HBO series “Sonic Highways,” the Foo Fighters announced they will be taking the stage at Wrigley Field on Aug. 29 (If that seems like a long time from now, you would be correct). Tickets go on sale Oct. 27.

Foo Fighters are a pretty fun band to see live and I think even if you’re only a casual fan, you would enjoy seeing them. They exceeded my expectations when I saw them a couple of years ago.

What does everybody think about the concert experience at Wrigley? I’ve only been to one of the concerts (Pearl Jam) over the years, and I thought it was a pretty neat experience.

The sound was adequate, and the atmosphere was unique. It felt a little weird, in a good way, to look up at the iconic Wrigley scoreboard in the middle of songs like  “Present Tense” and “Rearviewmirror.”

I could’ve done without the extra-long rain delay, however.

Other notes

* The Mesa Solar Sox dropped Monday’s Arizona Fall Legaue game 6-5. Dan Vogelbach was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Jacob Hannemann went 1-for-4 and Addison Russell went hitless in five at-bats.

* RHP Raisel Iglesias pitched a 1-2-3 inning against the Solar Sox. Iglesias was signed by the Reds out of Cuba for seven years, $27 million in June. The Reds believe he can be an MLB starter, but Iglesias has a small frame, so it will be worth monitoring.

* Kyle Zimmer, the top pitching prospect for Kansas City, has re-injured his shoulder, according to MiLB.com. Zimmer had been removed from his AFL start on Saturday, and it’s looking like he won’t pitch anymore this fall. He only recorded 4.2 innings in the minors this year because of the shoulder problems.

* The whereabouts of Cuban infielder Jose Fernandez are still unknown, according to Ben Badler. He and fellow Cuban teammate Lazaro Herrera haven’t played since Oct. 10.

* Apparently James Shields passed a kidney stone during the ALCS. Um, ouch.
