Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (3/14/26): Rockies 4, Cubs 3 – Brown Pitches Well in Walk-Off Loss

The Cubs headed to Talking Stick on Saturday for a contest against the Rockies at Salt River Fields. The road squad maintained a lead into the final inning before a walk-off home run sent them to defeat.

Ben Brown got the start and went four innings, allowing only an RBI groundout to Hunter Goodman in the 1st. Chicago used a run-scoring single by Kevin Alcántara and a sacrifice fly by Jonathon Long to move in front 2-1 in the 5th.

The North Siders expanded their advantage to 3-1 in the 6th inning, when a throwing error by the catcher on a Matt Shaw stolen base allowed Nico Hoerner to score from third. Colorado cut the deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the frame, and then Braxton Fulford won the game with a two-run homer against Grant Kipp in the 9th. (Box score)

Key Moment

It took just two batters for the Rockies to win the game in the 9th inning, with a cement-mixer slider getting way too much of the plate on the dinger.

Why the Cubs Lost

Three runs were not enough to win this game with a very inexperienced bullpen.

Stats That Matter

  • Brown was on it with six strikeouts and only three runners reaching base in four innings.
  • Alcántara had a couple of singles in this one.
  • Moisés Ballesteros doubled to get the rally going in the 5th.

Bottom Line

Brown demonstrated again on Saturday that he has nasty stuff if he can control it. It’s definitely worth another look at the big league level this season.

On Deck

The Cubs welcome the Dodgers to Sloan Park for a game at 3:05pm CT Sunday. Jameson Taillon is back from Team Canada to make the start in a matchup televised on Marquee.
