Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (3/1/25): Cubs 7, Guardians 4 – Untied! Suzuki Leads Cubs to Victory

The Cubs took on the Guardians at Sloan Park Saturday afternoon in the first half of split-squad games. Chicago got key contributions from several regulars to build up a big lead that they hung onto late to stay undefeated in Cactus League play.

Seiya Suzuki and Carson Kelly each had RBI singles in the bottom of the 1st inning to put the Cubs ahead 2-0. Suzuki doubled the lead in the following frame with a two-run knock, and the margin ballooned to 6-0 by the 6th.

Cleveland cut into the deficit in the late innings, but Chicago ended up winning by a score of 7-4. (Box score)

Key Moment

Suzuki had been hitless this spring before coming through twice with runners in scoring position on Saturday.

Why the Cubs Won

A good starting pitching performance and early offense is usually a winning strategy, and that was the case in this one.

Stats That Matter

  • Colin Rea did a solid job in this one as he battles for a rotation spot: 3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 2 K, and 2 BB.
  • Dansby Swanson reached base three times Saturday with a single and two walks.
  • Suzuki got a rare start in center field and handled himself very well.

Bottom Line

The Cubs head to Japan in less than two weeks, which means a lot of roster decisions will have to be made in the next week. What is already crunch time for players on the bubble under normal circumstances becomes even more so with the compressed timeline. Just something to keep in mind while watching these games.

On Deck

The other half of Chicago’s split squad takes on the Royals in Surprise Saturday at 7:05pm CT. Ben Brown is on the mound in a game that is not broadcast anywhere other than KC radio.
