Cubs Recall Caleb Kilian Among Several Monday Roster Moves
I’m running way late following several flight delays and a visit to a baseball training facility, so we’re once again rolling with the media release for the details here…
The Chicago Cubs today recalled right-handed pitchers Gavin Hollowell and Caleb Kilian from Triple-A Iowa. In corresponding moves, the Cubs placed right-handed pitcher Jorge López on the 15-day injured list with a right groin strain (retro to 9/20) and optioned right-handed pitcher Trey Wingenter to the Arizona Complex League.
Hollowell, 26, is 2-2 with a 4.94 ERA (17 ER/31.0 IP) in 31 Triple-A games this season with Albuquerque (Colorado), Reno (Arizona) and the Iowa Cubs. Since joining the I-Cubs on August 23, has pitched to a 1.93 ERA (2 ER/9.1 IP) with a 1-1 record, a 0.86 WHIP and a .125 opponent batting average (4-for-32) in seven relief appearances. Among I-Cubs with at least five outings since he was claimed, he ranks first in WHIP and opponent batting average and third in ERA and strikeouts per nine innings (14.46).
Across 32 career major league relief appearances, all with the Colorado Rockies, Hollowell owns a 2-2 record with 6.20 ERA (28 ER/40.2 IP) with 40 strikeouts. The six-foot seven-inch Somerset, N.J., native was selected by the Colorado Rockies in the sixth round of the 2019 draft and made his major league debut September 19, 2022, vs. San Francisco. The Cubs claimed Hollowell off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks on August 23.
Kilian, 27, owns a 2-0 record with a 3.70 ERA (20 ER/48.2 IP) in 16 appearances (seven starts) this season with Triple-A Iowa (13 games) and Double-A South Bend (three games), after opening the season on the 60-day injured list with a right shoulder strain. In his last eight outings, including seven starts, he has allowed two-or-fewer runs in all but one game and tallied 35 strikeouts and a 3.89 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
The six-foot four-inch native of Anaheim, Calif., made his major league debut on June 4, 2022, vs. St. Louis (5.0 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 6 SO), and has made six career major league appearances with the Cubs. Kilian, drafted by San Francisco in the eighth round of the 2019 draft, was acquired by the Cubs with outfielder Alexander Canario for infielder/outfielder Kris Bryant on July 30, 2021.
López, 31, has made 24 appearances for the Cubs this season, pitching to a 2.02 ERA (6 ER/26.2 IP) with a 1-1 record and two saves.
Wingenter, 30, has posted a 3.00 ERA (2 ER/6.0 IP) in five games since joining the Cubs this season.
The Cubs play the Philadelphia Phillies today at 5:40 p.m. CT at Citizens Bank Park, in a game that can be seen on Marquee Sports Network and heard on 670 The Score.
