Cubs Recall Ethan Roberts, Add Isaac Paredes, Option Miles Mastrobuoni
Wow, what a disappointing trade deadline. Rather than lament all the Cubs didn’t do, I’ll just turn it over to the media release to detail their latest personnel moves.
The Chicago Cubs today recalled right-handed pitcher Ethan Roberts from Triple-A Iowa. In an additional move, infielder Isaac Paredes has been added to the 26-man roster and infielder Miles Mastrobuoni has been optioned to Triple-A Iowa.
Roberts, 27, has not surrendered a run in four appearances (6.0 IP) for the Cubs this season, allowing seven hits and two walks with six strikeouts. He has spent the majority of the season with Triple-A Iowa after returning from the injured list, where he began the season, and has posted a 1.65 ERA (3 ER/16.1 IP) and a 0.98 WHIP in 14 relief outings. His 1.65 ERA and 0.98 WHIP both lead current Iowa pitchers (min. 10 G).
Paredes, 25, was acquired from Tampa Bay on Sunday. He is in his fifth major league season and is hitting .247 (89-for-363) with 19 doubles, one triple, 16 home runs, 55 RBI and a .793 OPS for Tampa, making 78 starts at third base and 13 starts at first base. The right-handed hitting infielder made his first career All-Star team this season. He ranks in the 91st percentile in the major leagues in walk percentage (12.0%), 89th percentile in whiff percentage (16.9%) and 82nd percentile in strikeout percentage (16.0%).
Mastrobuoni, 28, is hitting .200 (18-for-90) with three doubles and has recorded three defensive runs saved at third base in 43 games with the Cubs this season. In 32 games with the I-Cubs in 2024, he his 32-for-126 (.254) with 11 doubles, four home runs, 18 RBI and six stolen bases.
