Chicago Cubs Lineup (7/26/24): Bobby Witt Jr. Headlines Rebounding Royals

The Royals are proof of what can happen when you’ve got a superstar on your roster, though I’m not sure the fact that he’s homegrown is a good thing for Cubs fans. What I mean is that even if they end up getting MVP-caliber production from one of their current prospects at some point, it’s hard to see anyone in the system playing at the level of Bobby Witt Jr. The shortstop currently leads MLB with a very nice 6.9 fWAR and he leads his position in a number of offensive and defensive categories.

So while KC battles for a playoff spot, the Cubs sit in last place and have next to zero hope of being competitive this season. What’s worse, they’re committing the cardinal sin of being boring. They’re playing a milquetoast brand of baseball that’s about as lively as those cardboard cutouts of fans in the stands during the 2020 season. Hell, even that was more fun because at least it held a little novelty.

Just about the only reason to watch the Cubs this weekend is to get a glimpse of Witt and perhaps watch for dugout hugs as we near the trade deadline. For my money, I’d rather see Deadpool & Wolverine or Twisters. I already saw the former with my son on Thursday and I’d pay to see it again on the big screen because it was that fun. But I’m also a complete degenerate who will probably still end up watching Jed Hoyer’s mess unfold.

Speaking of which, Cody Bellinger was a missing yet again. That could either mean he’s being placed under a glass case to keep him safe or he’s nursing something and the team wants to keep it under wraps.
