Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (9/5/19): Cubs 10, Brewers 5 – Schwarber Grand Slam Fuels Win

The game was back and forth early, with Willson Contreras right in the middle of the Cubs scoring. He drove in the Cubs’ first two runs. The first run coming when he doubled to left in the 1st inning to drive in Ben Zobrist. He then hit a solo home run in the 4th inning to tie the game at 2-2.

While things stayed close early, with both teams scoring two runs in the 5th, the big blow came off the bat of Kyle Schwarber in the top of the 6th when he crushed a grand slam half way to Kenosha off Drew Pomeranz.  Holding a 9-4 lead, the Cubs did not look back from that point.

Cory Spangenberg and David Bote both added solo homers late to make it a 10-5 and that score would end up being the final. (Box Score)

Why the Cubs Won

The old adage of get on base, get over and get in was on full display tonight. Zobrist was the catalyst in lead off spot. He was on base in every single plate appearance and really helped to set the table and propel the Cubs offense.

Key Moment

Schwarber ended the sea-saw battle in 6th inning after he obliterated Pomeranz’s fastball for his second grand slam of the season.

Stats That Matter

• Quintana survived several high pitch innings to get through five innings of work. His offense picked him up and despite the short outing he came away with the victory – 5 IP, 4 R, 5 H, 5 K, 2 BB
• Contreras finished 4-for-5 with a home run, two doubles, and two RBI. He was just a triple shy of the cycle.
• Zobrist was clutch in the leadoff role going 3-for-3 with two walks and three runs scored.
• Schwarber’s grand slam really helped fuel this win. He finished 2-for-3 including a double.

Bottom Line

The Cubs extended their road winning streak to six games and took care of business to kick off this pivotal road trip. While Quintana wasn’t as sharp as he normally is against Milwaukee, his offense picked him up in a big way. Zobrist reaching base five times helped to jump start the rest of the offense.
