MVP: Albert Almora, Munenori Kawasaki, Matt Szczur, and Miguel Montero for their heroics in the top of the 9th
On a day that didn’t really matter for the Cubs, they performed admirably. If this were in the past, that would mean the season was over and they didn’t give up until the final out in a losing effort. This year, however, is much different. They won, and it took until two outs in the 9th to take the lead. Matt Szczur grounded a double down the right field line that scored Albert Almora and Munenori Kawasaki, then Miguel Montero murdered a baseball into the right field bleachers as the Cubs scored 4 runs, all with two outs. This team is truly special, y’all.
Albert Almora made an impressive defensive play in the bottom of the 6th to rob Eugenio Suarez of extra bases. Almora got turned around and started backpedaling toward the wall when he caught the ball while falling backwards. It was a bit scary to see his head take the brunt of the impact when he fell down, but he got back up and stayed in the game.
St. Louis won’t be in the playoffs this year!
The regular season is over. That makes me very sad. The good thing is that there is still some Cubs baseball, which I am both very excited and really nervous about.
The Cubs batters’ inability to take advantage of the walks that Robert Stephenson and co. issued today was problematic, and kind of annoying to witness.
That’s it for the regular season, folks! I hope you guys enjoyed the ride as much as I did. Now we get to the serious, nerve wracking business of the playoffs. The Cubs will host either the Mets or Giants on Friday, October 7th. Time of first pitch is to be determined. It’s going to be a good time, so join your friends and loved ones to root for the Cubs this postseason. It was a wonderful season and I look forward to seeing what the postseason has in store for this team.
